Review of "What Google Never Told You About Making Money From AdSense"
In his ebook, "What Google Never Told You About Making Money From AdSense", author Joel Comm teaches you a simple three-step process for turning Google's AdSense program into a reliable income stream for your web site. Joel shows you step-by-step how he actually uses the process in his ebook in his own business, complete with screen shots.
In his promotional copy, Comm claims to have raised his AdSense income from the $3.00 a day level to thousands per month. He even shows a screen shot of a $15K+ check and a shot of his stats page. What he doesn't tell you is how many pages contributed to that total. Now to be fair, it isn't completely his omission. Google's terms of service now allow you to disclose the gross amount you are making, but not click-through rates or earnings-per click. Even so, a two-page minisite ain't gonna pay the mortgage using AdSense.
Joel Comm does not simply ask you to believe he knows what he's saying. As I mentioned, he shows actual screen shots of his statistics page showing the daily earnings and monthly total. After reading the book and surveying some of his own sites, I can say Joel does walk his talk.
The real value in this book, nicknamed "AdSense Secrets", is the systematic process laid out so you can develop your own winning formula. Joel covers things like ad formats, placement, colors, pretty much all the variables. I found the whole formula easy to follow as I started using it on some of my own sites.
By showing you what worked for him, Joel Comm gives a solid starting point to testing what works for you. By pointing out the potholes he saw, he helps you avoid them.
Joel's focus on process over quick hit tricks is going to frustrate seekers of instant answers. Ask him "will this work for me?" and you get the classic answer "it depends", meaning try it on and if it fits, keep it.
So many "gurus" of making money online look down their noses at AdSense, I was a bit skeptical. Actually, more than a bit. However, the book itself appealed to my engineer's sense of logic and the results are starting to show in my own stats page.
One thing that would make "AdSense Secrets" even stronger would be a feeling for what order factors should be tested in, with a procedure for making sure the results are valid.
In future editions, I'd like to see Joel address the challenge of using AdSense with blogs. It seems that just about every blog I read has AdSense, and yet from listening to bloggers, I get the idea they aren't making much money at it.
If you have, or are planning to have, a content-based website, AdSense could make a lot of sense for you. And if you decide to use AdSense, "What Google Never Told YOu About Making Money From AdSense" deserves a place on your hard drive.
